ok, so i'm fully obsessed with cane furniture, it haunts me with its gorgeousness but i basically can't justify the cost cause some of that stuff is EXPENSIVE!!! i wanted to make my own budget version of some the lovely cabinets i keep spying on sites like urban outfitters.
if there was ever a piece of furniture crying out for an IKEA hack it has to be the ivar cabinet, it's beautiful in its simplicity.. those untreated wooden doors and those clean lines, ah yes we likey.
i figured the doors could easily be modified to add in some cane panels and guess what .. i was bloody right, hurrah! head over to hunker to see the step by step for this cane furniture hack and let me know if you try making it too!

I'm so excited to start off the new year with this DIY, not only do I love the end result but it's a sentimental one too..
last time I was in ireland I found a stash of wood slices in the garage.. I thought they were beautiful and immediately wanted to make something with them. pops managed to squeeze one into the boot of his car and brought it back to the UK for me- it was a little rough and bigger than the ones I'd originally seen so I decided to turn it into a side table.
working on this table was the perfect excuse to DIY with my dad over christmas- as the tree was from the tiny rural village he grew up in (and I spent my childhood exploring) it seemed appropriate that we made it together!
materials
tree/log slice (check local lumber yards)
screws and drill
if you're looking for a wood slab like mine I suggest trying your local timber merchants, you can easily find smaller ones on etsy and eBay too. the smaller ones make great stools if you already have some!
aside from attaching the legs all you really need to do is prep the slice. first off my dad used a wood plane to even out the top of the table, we didn't bother with the underside as it's not really visible.
after the top was smoothed out I used the hand sander to even the surface further. just keep sanding until you're happy it's level enough. I left the sides alone as I didn't want to disturb the remaining bark.
at this point if you want the stain/seal the table go ahead. I've decided to leave mine unfinished for now as I adore the bare wood. at some point I may use a spray sealant or wood preservative if the condition changes. (if you do leave it unfinished don't place anything too hot or wet onto it!)
flip the table top over and attach the legs with screws. I recommend these 40cm ones on amazon.

aside from attaching the legs and prepping the slice this is a very simple project. I love the rustic top against the delicate legs. the snazzy cinema light box you can see is from urban outfitters I discovered it whilst christmas shopping and had to buy it for myself- so damn cool right? james and I are already fighting over what slogans to add next..
it feels great to have taken something special and made it into something functional here in my home. what do you think- do you like it too?

I thought I'd share some snaps of my blogging space before I packed up and moved house! I'm already becoming quite sentimental about the move but I'm also excited to take those scary steps to becoming an actual grown up.. gulp.
as you can see I'm quite the hoarder.. I'm really looking forward to having more space so my new place won't be quite so busy! I tend to sit and blog at the little console table in the middle, I picked it up in a sale years ago and painted it myself!
as much as I love my console table I'm going to buy an actual desk in the next few weeks so I can have an 'official' office space in my new abode... exciting! I also have a lot of bookcases as I accumulated a horrifying amount of art theory books at university (and a fair amount of trashy novels that I simply can't bear to part with aha!)
storage is one of the things I need the most and this blue locker from argos is a life saver, I was kindly given one to review and I can honestly say its my favourite pieces of furniture! they have a massive range of office furniture but the office storage really appealed to me as I have so many things and not so many places to keep them all!!
because we're moving into a victorian house I'm really keen to blend the old with the new so I was really drawn the industrial feel of the metal locker, it also came in green but I was totally won over by the bright royal blue. I'm thinking about using it to store all my craft accessories and fabrics as they seem to be scattered in various locations at the minute and the locker would be the ideal solution to organise them!
it was also really easy to put together (no tools required!) which has given me a bit more confidence as tackling flat pack furniture is going to become a regular event in the next month.. winner!!
my blogging desk is pretty simple, my laptop (not the mac book pro of my dreams but it does the job) filofax, notebooks and usually a little pile of nail polishes I intend to swatch!
I love decorating my blog space walls with frames, postcards or pages from magazines! I guess this must be the natural progression from plastering my room with take that posters back in the day..
in case you wondering the the chair was an old DIY project of mine that I reupholstered with some cath kidston fabric, the bunting along the walls is handmade too so if you want to know how to make something similar have a look at my DIY page and you'll find a tutorial!
so that's the mini tour! I hope you like my little space; I'm looking forward to putting together a brand new one when I've moved.
